Strategies for Decluttering Your Kitchen

I think the kitchen is easily the biggest clutter magnet in most homes for a couple of reasons:

1. Everyday clutter covers the counters and table since the kitchen is often the “heart of the home” and a temporary resting place for a million different things.

2. Within kitchen cabinets and drawers, many people have tons of gadgets and tools that we justify because of their practicality.

However, a cluttered kitchen is an inefficient kitchen and, depending on the level of clutter, it can also be a kitchen that becomes stressful and chaotic rather then cozy and inviting.

Decluttering the Kitchen

So how do you go about decluttering your kitchen? We’re not going to talk about clearing the counters today, but we are going to look at what’s hiding in your kitchen cabinets and drawers.

Like most decluttering projects, it’s important to ask yourself several questions as you go through the process so that you can objectively evaluate each gadget and tool to make a decision about whether to keep it or whether to let it go. These questions are especially important in the kitchen:

1. Do I use this item, or do I just think I use it? Maybe you made ice cream once, and it was really fun, and you’re sure you’re going to want to do it again, so you’ve counted the ice cream maker as a favorite gadget. But if it’s been three years since you’ve pulled it out, is it really?

2. Do I have multiples of the same thing? Do I really need seven wooden spoons? The answer may be yes depending on your cooking style and how often you cook and want to do dishes, but it’s important to ask yourself the question and really consider the answer.

3. Could I do the same thing with another tool? There are gadgets and nifty little tools for pretty much every cooking task there is. Pampered Chef has built a whole business around them! And while I’m not completely opposed to specialty tools (I love my orange knife, lemon zester and strawberry huller), I think it’s important to be realistic about how many of them are necessary. For a little item, it might be okay to keep something around that really only has one very specific purpose, but as you start looking at larger items, think about whether the space they take up justifies their usefulness!

Do you have gadgets and tools in your kitchen that are simply taking up space in your drawers and cabinets? What could you let go of today to help reduce the clutter?

    Hey, Mandi!

I’ve done a big paring down of my own kitchen drawers (Goodwill loves me). Since we plan to move into a fifth wheel in a few years, I decided to head in the down-sizing direction.

I got rid of all kinds of stuff I didn’t use, including 3 extra ice cream scoops (we may eat ice cream every few months or so at home) and 2 extra pizza cutters. One’s enough.

    Cheers,
    Laura

As a former P. Chef rep, I have issues. Nix that. I HAD issues. I purged it. I also added a 2nd tool turn about so I could find what I needed. That did the trick. It is helpful to dump all the kitchen tools in to a shallow tub. As you use something, wash it and put it back in the drawer. At the end of 30 days, donate what is left in the tub. :)

I have a small kitchen when it comes to drawer space. It helps so I only keep what I use and there is barely any room for that!

I like Christy’s idea! We have so many duplicates it’s nuts. And I keep a lot “because one day I will need to replace this [insert item] I use every day”. But I’ve only done it once! And while it was nice to reach into the drawer & get a new wooden spoon (after I caught the other one on fire!) would it have been so bad to get a new one at the store next time & save drawer space?

I’ve purged larger items but I think I know what I’m going to do today! Oh, and pull that NEW toaster out that I have never used and give it away!

    Thanks for the inspiration!

Back in January, I went through the kitchen shelf by shelf, drawer by drawer. I purged and re-organized. The result was a much more user friendly kitchen. However, my utensil drawer still looks identical to your picture above. That still needs some work :)

I’m not too bad at stockpiling gadgets and utensils…my achilles heel is tupperware. I have tons of bottoms with no lids and lids with no bottoms and for some reason I never seem to throw any of them away.

I hope the picture was your stuff, because I saw many of the same tools!! I LOVE my pizza cutter!

The tips were very useful, and I also liked the idea of dumping them, and only keeping what you use and put back.
    Thanks!!!

This made me laugh! I definitely have stuff that I always think I may use one day! I also have plenty of tupperware bottoms & lids that do not have a pair! I try to keep the bottoms since I can still cover them with tin foil, but the lid drawer definitely can use some purging!

It seems no matter how often I “think” I de-clutter my drawers, stuff magically appears! I love clearing out my kitchen, it is one room in the house that needs to be streamlined for sure!

How strange that this was in my RSS reader today. :-) When you see my comment love post, you will see why I say that. LOL!

Anyway, I don’t have an issue with the insides of spaces, it is the outsides that are a huge problem for me. I think that I because I always start organizing by doing cabinets and drawers but burn out before I get to dusting and sweeping. :-)

It’s like your reading my mind. I’ve been blogging about organizing my kitchen. I have started and will finish I get back from my vacation. It’s nice to have clear counter and to have things in the cabinets and drawers that I definitely use on a regular basis.

Very much like the hanger trick. Turn all of your clothes hangers backwards today. When you wash and put something away, put the hanger in the regular way.

In a few weeks you should notice which clothes you have worn and which you could now more easily part with!

I am going to try this kitchen tool trick!

We had to downsize a lot when moving overseas so our kitchen is pretty clear, but recently, I read a blog entry at Making This Home that mentioned a gadget free Salad Spinner (http://www.makingthishome.com/2010/04/08/gadget-free-salad-spinner) by just using a towel rather than storing the spinning tool. I had been thinking about buying a Spinner at this time and this was a great solution without adding something more to my already tiny cabinets.
