Simple Shoe Organization for a Welcoming Entryway

During the summer, you’ll often find shoes scattered through our entryway because the kids are in and out so often that none of us really feel like taking the time to put them away each time.

But whether your family consists of 2, 3, 4 (or more!) people and whether you each have 1, 2, 3 (or more!) pairs of shoes, having shoes strewn around the front door contributes to a feeling of chaos and disorder.

On the other hand, having a neat and organized entryway not only makes your home feel more welcoming for guests; it can also help you to feel better when you get home after work, a play date or running errands or when you’re feeling overwhelmed by your to-do list in general!

The key is to find a storage system that keeps the shoes neat, organized and contained but also makes them easily accessible.

If you’re keeping your shoes inside a coat closet anyway, there are tons of inexpensive racks and shelves that help you maximize and organize the space.

We keep our shoes inside the front closet in a hanging shoe organizer. Rather than hanging the organizer over the door, though, we simply tacked it to the wall itself so that the shoes are out of the way but easy to get to. Everyone knows where their shoes are, and we can get them out – and put them away – quickly!

If our entryway was wider, though, I’d love to have a bench with built-in shoe storage like the one above because it combines my favorite two features – form and function. The girls currently sit on the floor to put their shoes on, but if my husband or I want to sit, we have to trek halfway across the house to get to a chair!

I also love the added style of shoe cabinets, which are great if you don’t have a convenient closet for your shoes. With the dividers on the inside, they help keep shoes organized and out of sight, and some come with additional drawers for organizing the other miscellaneous keys, mail, et cetera that you keep by the front door.

How do you organize the shoes in your front entryway? Is it a struggle to keep them need and orderly?

I love every part of our home, except the entry from the garage where everyone comes in. In the original plans, we were supposed to have a bench and cubby system there but the house was too wide for the lot and we had to shrink some stuff. So…now there is just a small closet in a small entry way. Shoes are always a problem. We have a rack right outside in the garage that everyone uses in the winter for wet shoes, but not so much in the summer. I think it the thoughts of the summer creepy crawlys getting into the shoes!

As I walked out the door this morning, I looked at our shoes and thought, I really need to do a post on shoe organization!

We currently use a bench with built in shoe cubbies. It works great (as long as the shoes get put in the cubbies!) I LOVE that wooden cabinet too…gorgeous!

I also have an over-the-door shoe organizer on our back closet door; but I use this for hats, scarves, gloves, and other outdoor accessories. It works well for our family.

we just use a cheap old set of shelves from Target (the kind made out of particle board and you put together when you get home). We stack two sets on top of each other and each person gets a “box”

We also have a rug underneath the boxes, and ask that each person wipe their shoes before they go in the box …

    It works great!

We use a BIG basket. It’s easy to toss sandals, flip flops inside and the kids are pretty good about it. Guess that’s all that counts.

I like the suggestions you posted although 3 yrs ago my husband created a solution to our problem. He and our teen sons build a narrow but tall wood shelf and screwed it to a wall in the back entry way where it fits perfectly. I especially like it because I no longer have to climb over mounts of shoes to get the laundry room! It also gave hubby some time with our sons—they are all proud of the project and I like the outcome!

I love that shoe cabinet. I’d need a couple since we have so many shoes in our house.

I would love to have a shoe bench type of thing. The only thing is, that I could see some issues with it: Cubbies not big enough for my husband’s shoes, wet/snowy shoes that have to touch each other and then gets the cubbie hole wet along with the shoe. Maybe I should take up carpentry and design my own! ;)

We have our grandkids shoes in a bench with a hinged lid by the entrance. Works great for their every day shoes. Shelves in our front closet for everyone else’s shoes.

Only issue we have is the smell. I have tried many different things in the closet, and haven’t found any that work. If you open the door, it is horrible, the smell. Would love suggestions for that part.

My kids’ shoes go in a basket by the back door as soon as we come in. My shoes go in a wire basket shelf thing on the other side of the door, also (usually) when I come in as well. We also have a big mat that stretches across the entry to keep all of the snow/dirt/yuck under control

That bench with shoe storage is gorgeous. We have an old tray mobile with the wheels removed. The top level is for putting things I need to give to people, and a few decorative items, then next level has a box with all our shoes in, and nothing on the third yet.

Love the shoe cabinet/shoe benches! Never realized that those existed before but wow, I’d love to find an affordable alternative for that. Seating + storage, who could ask for more?

Question: I thought the way the shoes displayed in that first image were a gang symbol for a drug deal? Just curious.

I’m afraid I’m not up on gang symbols, but I did just look it up on Snopes, and it looks like there’s no definitive answer as to whether it is true or an urban legend: http://www.snopes.com/crime/gangs/sneakers.asp

I just thought it was a cute picture of disorganized shoes. ;)

We have 2 adults & 4 girls living here, so it goes that we have a few shoes hanging around. I have tried numerous organizing techniques, & think I may have found a simple, green solution. I used old diaper boxes (the brand we buy is narrow & long) & found some cute contact paper to cover them in. Then I put an initial on each & now they aren’t digging through a giant bin or looking at the pile in the floor (in front of the beautiful empty shelving unit!) when looking for their shoes.
