Quick Tip: Load Silverware in Your Dishwasher by Type

To make unloading your dishwasher even easier, sort your silverware as you load your dishwasher so that all of the forks are together in one space, all of the spoons in another, knives in another and so on. When it’s time to unload, simply grab one set at a time and put them in the their proper slot in the silverware drawer, and you’re done!

I know, I know…they say not to do this because the silverware will nest together and not get cleaned properly, but I’ve been doing it this way since we got married, and we rarely have nested or dirty utensils.

This works for me too!!! And always empty the bottom shelf first in case you have an upturned cup of water cascade down on the bottom shelf as you unpack… it is the small things in life, like a well packed dishwasher, that are so satisfying!!!!

I KNEW I wasn’t the only one who did this. DH has always thought I was nuts because I try to stack like-with-like for ease of unloading later. Thanks for proving I’m not the only one who thinks like this! :D (Now to go show this post to DH and my sis to prove I’m not nuts!!)

It doesn’t work for everyone. My dishwasher saves room by putting the silverware on the door – great for spacing but horrible for getting the silverware clean! If there is any food particle on the silverware it stays on the silverware because the water doesn’t rush through. I have to carefully separate the silverware and make sure no spoons are nesting inside other spoons. Ah, well. Glad it works for you!

I have done this for several years and wondered back then how I’d never thought of it sooner. Like se7en, I also unload the bottom shelf first so as not to spill water on the dry dishes below. Thanks for sharing all of your great tips!

I’ve tried this, but it’s not ever worked for me. The utensils really do get nested too often. And really it’s not a huge deal to me to separate them, so I’ve not worried too much about it.

Actually I never clean silverware in the dishwasher. Prefer to do it by hand because apparently silver is too delicate for the dishwasher. Ever had any problems with damaged silverware?
